My favourite holiday experience was watching a Spaniard pour water down a hole. This wasn’t just any old hole, of course; it was a small geyser in Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote. A few seconds after he poured the water down the hole, it came shooting back out again several feet into the air.

He also showed us a barbecue, laden with chickens which were cooking using only the heat from the volcano below.

Tree of Life: The tree that grows in the middle of a desert

Most people don’t cope with a lack of drink very well. I know I certainly don’t; I need to have a ready supply of ice-cold carbonated drinks on standby throughout the day. Aokigahara: Japan’s suicide forest

Aokigahara: Japan's suicide forest

It’s said that going for a quick walk outside can lift even the most stubborn feelings of depression. A few minutes taking in the fresh air, the birdsong and the sound of the wind blowing through the trees can cheer you up and put a spring in your step. This is all assuming, however, that you’re not going for a walk in Japan’s Aokigahara forest. Because, chances are, a walk in Aokigahara will end in the taking of your own life.

Coco de mer: Is this the world’s strangest palm tree?

Coco de mer: Is this the world's strangest palm tree?

You might have noticed that we have a bit of an obsession with the bizarre and the unusual. So you can only imagine how excited we were when we discovered the coco de mer, a palm tree which can be found on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse in the Seychelles.
